Lady Gaga - Applause
Lady Gaga's applause video could be described as postmodern for a number of reasons. She mixes together artistic references from the past, such as a background designed to look like a german impressionist film with her costume based on Botticelli's The Birth of Venus. This bricolage presents the idea that different types of art can be mixed together to create new art. She is also fulfilling the postmodern idea that there are no boundaries between "high" art and "low" art by referencing classic paintings in a pop music video.
Wayne's World
Wayne's World can be described as postmodern because there are many intertextual references to aspects of pop culture that the audience is expected to recognise. There are also several self-referential jokes about the form of film, such as jokes about product placement. This along with the characters breaking the fourth wall and looking at the audience, draws the audience's attention to the fact that this is an artificial construct.
Deadpool
In the opening credits of Deadpool, the filmmakers are commenting on the Superhero genre and the stock characters, such as a "British villain" that generally appear in these types of films. So despite the fact that they are largely following conventional genre ideas within the film, by commenting on it they add a layer of humour and self awareness to the film. A media literate audience will understand the references as Superhero films are popular. The boundaries between Ryan Reynold's real life and the film are also blurred in the opening credits when we see a shot of an issue of People magazine with him on the cover and a Green Lantern trading card - another Superhero film he appeared in. These intertextual references remind the audience that Reynolds is an actor playing a role and this film is artificial.
